Future of Robotic Surgery
Medical Director of the Global Robotics Institute at Florida Hospital, Dr. Vipul Patel shares his vision of the next steps of robotic surgery. He believes telesurgery is a future application of the daVinci robot. Dr. Patel performed his 4000th robotic removal of the prostate, a milestone no single surgeon has achieved. Dr. Patel was an early adopter of robotic technology and has been an eyewitness to the growth of the surgical technique since it was FDA approved in 2000. In just 10 years time, robotics has changed the way urologists remove the prostate. Now, 85% of patients who have their prostates removed are choosing a robotic approach.

Ronald Bress became the first person in the world to undergo a robot-assisted triple bypass using an advanced, minimally invasive heart-lung machine on March 31, 2009. Bress, from Cheektowaga, New York — a small town near Buffalo — left the hospital four days later and was able to fly home just nine days later. He learned about this innovative surgical option from the UMMC web site, as he was searching for an alternative to the open heart surgery his doctors were recommending. Hear what Ronald has to say about the UMMC web site and his surgeon, Johannes Bonatti, MD, a cardiac surgeon at the University of Maryland Medical Center and professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine — the man responsible for performing the pioneering surgery. Heart Surgery 101, with Dr. Oz
Some people forget that when I’m not on Oprah, I’m a practicing heart surgeon. I had an assistant shoot this video of me and my team repairing a patient’s mitral valve. The mitral valve is on the left side of the heart, where blood comes in from the lungs and gets pumped out to the rest of the body. When the valve doesn’t work, as in this patient, blood flows backward into the lungs… a big problem. Hope you enjoy, and be sure to check out “The Dr. Oz Show,” starting Sept 14.
