Our Robot – GBMC Robotic Surgery

Robotic Surgery Offers Hope After weighing the options, Mr. Dickson opted to become GBMC’s first trans-oral robotic tonsil resection (TORS) patient. Traditionally, a tonsil resection on a cancer patient involves opening up the jaw and making an incision into the neck to gain the best access to the tumor. Tissue is often taken from another area of the body and attached to the resected region, creating a “flap” that covers and heals over the wound. Additionally, the patient usually needs a tracheostomy to aid in breathing, as well as a feeding tube. Using TORS, which utilizes GBMC’s da Vinciā„¢ Robotic Surgery System, a lighted robotic instrument with two video cameras provides surgeons with increased access to the tight confines of the throat, allowing for a more precise resection, while keeping the jaw intact. “The precision of TORS reduces the patient’s hospital stay to just a few days,” explains Dr. Ha. “And, Mr. Dickson could swallow the next day with little pain.”
